Abstract
The worldwide epidemic of the COVID-19 has prompted the public in each country to recognize and evaluate its quarantine system. Meanwhile, in Korean society, the quarantine system was highly valued and became a national brand.
The word ¡°K-quarantine,¡± which first appeared around March 2020, quickly became popular among Koreans and regarded as the main basis for national pride. This study is intended to examine Koreans' pride in K-quarantine actually stimulated the COVID-19 preventive behaviors based on the health belief model.
The analysis was conducted on 927 adults in the ¡°COVID-19 Risk Recognition and Preventive Behaviors Survey¡± collected in 2020. In the process, correlation analysis, one-way layout variance analysis, and structural equation model analysis were conducted. According to the analysis, pride in quarantine was relatively low in people in their 20s, men, and undereducated, and men were doing less preventive actions than women. After controlling various covariates(such as age, sex, income, education), pride in quarantine influenced preventive actions through perceived benefits and perceived barriers. Perceived benefits and perceived barriers completely mediated between quarantine pride and preventive actions.
On the other hand, when classifying study participants into sub-average and above-average pride in quarantine groups, it was confirmed that there would be a difference in the way in which information about COVID-19 is interpreted depending on the level of pride in quarantine, which would affect health beliefs.
These findings raise the need to develop more effective intervention messages for groups with less pride in quarantine. And it also shows us that self-deprecation can have as much adverse effects on public health as arrogance.
